January 2009 - Manchester
There was a Cruise Liner Special working from
Southampton to Manchester Piccadilly with passengers that had been on a
Christmas cruise aboard Cunard's Queen Victoria. This train was worked by top
and tail DRS class 47's and I got the idea of a night shot of the train at the
impressive Manchester Piccadilly station. Rather than just make a one shot move,
I decided to make a day of it and have a look at the Metrolink trams. Being
winter, there wasn't much opportunity for sunny shots in and around the city
centre, but it passed the time. I did manage a handful of nice tram shots before
heading to Piccadilly station for the 47's, which rolled into platform 5 about
25 early and pulled up in a pretty good position to round off a pleasant day.

Oakamoor By Night
A unique EMRPS photo charter at the old sand
loading facility at Oakamoor on the Churnet Valley Railway. The locos used were
25322 'Tamworth Castle' and 37075, with the bonus of former Oakamoor shunter
'Brightside' thrown in for good measure. It was a great evening of photography
made all the better by the efforts of the CVR staff on site and the excellent
lighting job done by the EMRPS lighting crew.

Nottingham Trams in the Dark v3.0
After two attempts last year at photographing
Nottingham trams in the dark, I made a third attempt and concentrated on the
area around The Forest, Hyson Green and Wilkinson Street.

Desperate Move for a Ped
I made a mega early morning leap for a 4Q08
test train worked by 31285 which was booked to reverse twice in Nottingham
station. The first attempt pulled up with a 156 partially blocking the shot and
with a shadow up the front of the loco. Even worse, the second attempt pulled up
behind a HST and couldn't even be photographed. To rescue the trip so as not to
go away empty handed, I drove up into the town centre and photographed the first
couple of trams at the Lace Market - a night shot I had never done before.
18th January 2009 -
Stafford and GCR
After nearly two year's service, the trusty
Nikon D80 was retired and replaced with a Nikon D300. I collected it from
Stafford, so went and tested it on some units at Stafford station before heading
home via the GCR. It looked like the 1415 off Loughborough had travelled via
Dublin judging by the steam heat van behind the loco!

Q6 at the GCR
A photo charter organised by Don Bishop at
the GCR with visiting Q6 63395 on the windcutter rake.
24th January 2009 - Steam at
Oakamoor (and an Ice Cream Van!)
The EMRPS teamed up with 30742 Charters to
stage a night shoot at Oakamoor using 4F 44422 and 'Jinty' 47279. Following on
from our successful diesel night at Oakamoor at the start of the month, many
people, myself included, thought it would be a good idea to stage a repeat
performance with steam. At the end of the evening after all the steam photos had
been taken, that old EMRPS favourite 25322 'Tamworth Castle' also put in a
surprise appearance. Well it was just sat there begging to be used, so rude not
to I suppose!
A big thank you to the lighting team for an excellent job which this time not
only included lighting, but a fair amount of vegetation clearance too!. Thanks
too to Tel for supplying a smoke machine to bring the steam locos to life, to
Martin for all his help, and to the CVR staff and crew who were excellent as
always.
31st January 2009 - Tanfield
Railway Photo Charter and the Tyne & Wear Metro
A very enjoyable photo charter at the
Tanfield Railway organised by David Fletcher to help raise money for the
Sittingbourne & Kemsley Light Railway. The loco used was former Backworth
Colliery No.49, a 1943 built RS&H Austerity 0-6-0ST. Before the charter, I
made a trip to the north side of the river Tyne to have a look at the 'timewarp'
that is Tynemouth Metro station and photograph a few Tyne & Wear Metro's.
The photo charter was
sunny for most of the morning session, and then had a very well timed dinner
break, during which it was possible to get to Newcastle to see newly built A1
60163 arriving on it's first passenger carrying mainline run. Sadly though, this
was not in sun, but I have included the shots here for the record - I knew I should have gone to Durham instead! Back at the photo
charter in the afternoon, the sunshine returned for a short while and then the
day was rounded off with a night shoot at Marley Hill shed.
