Old Town Square (Staroměstské
náměstí)
Home of the Astronomical Clock and the Baroque Church dedicated to St
Nicholas
Prague Castle (Pražský hrad)
Standing atop a hill that overlooks the city of Prague, the Castle District
contains many interesting buildings including the Archbishop's Palace, the
Cathedral of St Vitus and the Castle itself. The area is well worth exploring,
but it is also worth viewing the castle from the opposite bank of the River
Vltava, especially at dusk as the sun sets behind the Castle buildings.
Petrin Tower (Petřínská
Rozhledna)
On the top of Petrin Hill stands a tower dating back to 1891 that is based
on the Eiffel Tower. The viewing gallery at the top of the tower stands 53
metres above the ground and affords spectacular views across the city of Prague.
It is best visited late afternoon when the city and the River Vltava lay
perfectly sunlit before you.
Charles Bridge
(Karlův most)
The Charles Bridge crosses the River Vltava between the Old Town and the
Lesser Town and is only accesible to pedestrians. All along it's length buskers,
traders and entertainers delight the crowds. Each parapet has it's own monument
or statue and photos of some of these are included below, along with views from
the bridge itself and some views of the Malá Strana (Lesser Town) from one of
the towers at the Lesser Town end of the bridge.
Lesser Town (Malá Strana)
Below are several photographs taken in the Lesser Town including the Church
of St Nicholas and the street called Nerudova where many of the buildings have
emblems cast into the stone work depicting what the building was or still is
used for (note the house with the three fiddles - formerly home to a family of
violin makers).
River Vltava
The rather wide Vltava winds through the centre of Prague with both sides of
the city connected by several rather elegant bridges. Also included is a night
shot of the Kranner Fountain which stands on the east bank of the river.
Wenceslas Square (Václavské náměstí)
Right in the heart of the Old Town, Wenceslas Square is a long boulevard
watched over by the National Museum and a statue of St Wenceslas.
