Abandoned Railways in the Leicester Area - Leicester & Swannington Railway

The Leicester & Swannington Railway used to run from Leicester West Bridge to Swannington. This route suffered from a height restriction through Glenfield tunnel and locos used had to have low cab roofs and chimneys.

The site of the former West Bridge station has this simple display to remind people of the history of this location. The site is now a recreation ground.

At the end of the recreation ground (known to locals as 'The Rally'), the line used to cross Fosse Road North. The original bridge has been replaced by a footbridge, but the bridge abutments are original.

This ventilation shaft stands above Glenfield Tunnel. It is clearly visible from the adjacent A563 ring road (New Parks Boulevard). For a long while, this 'monument' was hidden from view by some large bushes, but these have recently been cut back to allow this open view.

In the centre of Glenfield, this painted board depicting a Midland 2F leaving Glenfield Tunnel reminds villagers and visitors of Glenfield's history.

If you know where to look, the northern portal of Glenfield tunnel still exists. The other end has been filled in and built on.
