The time is 0134, and with the kind
assistance of the inspector on duty and the driver of 627, it was arranged that
627 would pause
briefly in Albert Square in Fleetwood for a photograph. This was the very last
traditional tram to depart from Fleetwood and run along
the street section before it was closed for rebuilding as part of the new
'supertram' system. It was a strange moment, eerily quiet after
the tram came to a stand, and with the early signs of a sea fret coming in from
the Irish Sea. The photo was taken and the tram set off
noisily down Lord Street and almost immediately, the sea fret swallowed up the
entire town. At the time, the information was that old
trams would still operate on the tramway, but this would be along Blackpool
Promenade for tourists and traditional trams would never
run in Fleetwood again. Of course we now know otherwise, and thankfully, the
heritage trams have regularly visited Fleetwood since
the tramway was upgraded, and long may it continue.
